Unlike last week, we didn’t get any sweeps across the five ITA Regionals finishing over the last few days. But there were a few schools that stood out at the front of the pack.
Ten spots in the NCAA Championships men’s singles draw and five in the doubles draw were awarded. Now, 36 of 64 spots in the draw have been claimed, as we gear up for ITA Sectionals and Conference Masters in two weeks. There is still a lot of work to do for many of the top names. Only three of the top 10 players on the men’s side have claimed a spot in the NCAA singles draw — albeit, a number of them have sat out and not played in the fall.
In the Midwest Regional, the Ohio State men secured two more spots in the NCAA men’s draw, adding to the two the Buckeyes already claimed at All Americans. And three more Ohio State men are set to compete in the central sectional as they look to qualify themselves, No. 10 Matthew Forbes, No. 12 Preston Stearns and No. 27 Alexander Okonkwo. Peter Nad and Chase Thompson (Notre Dame) got the job done for the fighting Irish in the doubles final, continuing the streak of Notre Dame putting someone in the individual championships, dating back 22 years.
Georgia also found success in its regional, taking both singles spots after putting four players in the semifinals. TCU transfer Julian Alonso (Georgia) took down blue chip recruit, sophomore Noah Johnston to secure a spot, while veteran Memphis transfer Maxime Dubouch (Georgia) beat Cooper Johnson (Georgia).
Pepperdine swept the singles side at the Southwest Regional with juniors David Fix (Pepperdine) and Lasee Poertner (Pepperdine) reaching the final.
The Northeast Region was the only mixed bag as qualifiers came from three different schools. Nischal Spurling (Penn) and Landon Ardila (Princeton) qualified in singles, while Andrew Ena and Damir Zhalhasbay (Columbia) qualified in doubles.
Carpico is now qualified for both singles and doubles, joining Andres Santamarta Roig (Virginia), Aidan Kim (Ohio State), Victor Markov (Clemson) and Igor Kudriashov (Ole Miss).
